A malocclusion (improper bite) can affect anyone at any age. It can impact speech, chewing and facial symmetry, and severe cases can contribute to digestive problems, TMJ, gum disease and serious tooth decay. Treating it early can help you avoid expensive restorative work later.

Common problems orthodontics treats

  • Overcrowding: not enough room in the jaw for all the adult teeth, leading to displaced, rotated or misaligned teeth.
  • Overbite: the upper jaw sticks out relative to the lower jaw, giving a “toothy” smile and a receding chin.
  • Underbite: the lower jaw sticks out relative to the upper jaw, making the chin look prominent.

Overbites and underbites are usually caused by genetics or developmental delays. Orthodontists may work alone or with a maxillofacial surgeon.

How it helps

Based on panoramic x-rays, bite impressions and an exam, treatment may include:

  • Fixed braces: metal or ceramic brackets and an archwire that gradually move teeth. They can correct even severe misalignment.
  • Removable appliances: headgear, retainers, nearly invisible Invisalign® aligners, palate expanders (for crowding) and faceguards (for jaw development delays).

Whatever the problem or your age, orthodontic appliances can realign teeth and create a beautiful smile.
